welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm tortie campbell. the u.s. coast guard begins to search the waters off marin county. it's in response to a frantic may day call. claudine wong has an update. >> good morning. i'm waiting for the coast guard to get back to me. we know yesterday, they spanned this area, from here, south to angel island. they are looking for the distressed caller. the problem is they don't know who or what they are looking for. all they know is a female

caller called in a may day shortly before 10:00 last night. there was very little information. here's what the coast guard said this morning about that call. >> it was a woman calling, i have a may day. listen to me. listen to me. i have a may day. the coast guard of san francisco was able to reestablish communication with the woman. they never heard back from her. >> reporter: they also put out a call to other vessels for any type of distressed voters. they did send two vessels out on the water to search the waters for any sign of a distressed voter -- boater and that came up empty. they say this is like someone calling 911. so they take this as an

emergency and take it very seriously. they were hoping that this air search would help them excommand the area of their search. we're waiting back to see if that air search is able to get underway. we're also gonna head over to yerba buena island and check back with you -- and check back with you a little bit later. back to you. 7:02. boy, it was a violent night in oakland with a rash of shootings. there were three shootings all about the same time. jade hernandez is live in oakland with more on the violence that happened. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. shooting investigations are not unusual in oakland. but last night the calls began rolling in. three shootings all took place within an hour. we put the shootings on a map this morning to give you a better idea of where these took place. the first at foothill boulevard and 62nd. then 79th avenue and holly street and then 36th street and

west street. the first happened at foothill boulevard and 62nd, where a man was shot. someone shot the man in the back. while officers were helping that victim, someone drove up to that and reported another shooting on 79th avenue and holly street. officers found a woman there. her finger had been shot off. paramedics rushed her to island -- highland hospital and dispatchers went on the third shooting of the night. a man and a woman this time, their injuries were more severe. both were rushed to surgery, once they arrived at the hospital and are in critical condition this morning. at this point, the shootings don't seem to be connected but no information was released about any of the victims. this morning, the department is asking for anyone with any information about the shootings to call police immediately. we have contacted the police department this morning and we're waiting for an update in any of these shootings. reporting live from oakland,

jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:04. well, the union city man accused of shooting a fremont police officer is due to be arraigned today in court. 20-year-old andrew barrientos faces attempted murder and other charges in connect dark refresh -- in connection with the near fatal shooting of officer todd young. he was arrested two weeks ago right near the mexican border. officer young is still in the hospital with critical wounds to his legs. he will probably need physical therapy but is expected to recover. we're learning more about the victim of a hotel homicide in the east bay city of newark. police found the body near the w hotel on gateway boulevard yesterday morning. investigators have identified the victim has 26-year-old july lee julia hughes. police say he was a suspect in a homicide -- he was a suspect

in the homicide but the charges were later dropped. >> there was a series of five to ten gunshots, pow, pow, pow. and then very angry words and then a racial expletive that you don't want to hear. >> ktvu news obtained this picture of the sunday night pool party on a twitter account. police estimate as many as 400 people were there. investigators are interviewing many party guests as they search for the man's kill he. >> the future of three schools in the west contra costa unified school district may be decided tonight. kennedy high school, olinda elementary school and grant elementary school are on the chopping block. last year the school decided to close the schools to save money. the city of richmond came up with $1.5 million to keep the schools open through this year.

tonight, richmond city council will be voting on whether or not to continue funding those schools. caltrans is said to put the finishing touches on the first freeway toll lane. this is said to be opening next week. when it opens, solo drivers can use the diamond lane if they pay a fee. a testing period is set to start next sunday. during that time tolls will not be collected. but traffic planners expect delays during the transition as commuters get used to the big change. hey, sal, it sounds like the commute is wide awake now, isn't it 1234. >> it is. it's getting crowded out there for sure. let's go out to the bay bridge toll plaza where we see more people showing up. it's backed up for about a 10 minute to 12-minute delay.

after midnight. a traveling kaiser nurse from mississippi, says she and her coworker were staying next door to the unit where the fire started. >> the flames were whooshing out. it was kind of bad. i'm still shake been up -- shaken up a little bit about that. >> that nurse and others were relocateed. the man being blamed for causing the fire was taken to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. investigators are trying to determine what caused an early- morning fire near a busy bay area freeway. it started a few hours ago just off highway 101 near sir francis drake boulevard in larkspur. crews were able to keep the flames away from nearby homes. the fire is no longer causing traffic problems. the plans to burn the koran has caused an international

uproar. in afghanistan, hundreds of people staged a protest chanting "death to america." even throwing stones at a passing convoy. alison burns is in our washington, d.c. bureau with more. >> reporter: good morning, dave. this is new information. the head of that small church in gainesville, florida seems to be dismissing the appeal of the top commander in afghanistan. the church called the -- called the outreach center is planning to burn korans on 9/11. the paster says they want -- the pastor says they want to draw attention. general david petraeus and other officials say it will undermine the mission of u.s. troops and even put them in danger. the pastor went on tv this morning. here's some of what we're hearing. >> overseas we see they have no problem burning our flag. they have no problem calling for the death of america or for the death of our president.

so we feel it's time to stand up. >> we're over here to defend the rights of the american citizens. we're not debating the first amendment rights that the people have but i will tell you their very actions will, in fact, jeopardize the safety of the young men and women serving in uniform here. >> already, there's been big protests in afghanistan and indonesia. the church members say they are praying about what to do next. reporting live from washington, d.c., alison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. >> okay, alison, thank you. 7:16. the man known as spiderdan promises to climb again after scaling one of san francisco's tallest skyscrapers. speck eight taters yesterday -- spectators yesterday watched as dan goodwin climbed the millenium to youer with. he used suction cups. goodwin says one of the main reasons was to draw attention to the vulnerability to

skyscrapers to american attacks. >> i felt it was my moral obligation to do it. because i feel our country is vulnerable to another attack. >> now, goodwin is a stage 4 cancer survivor. he said that was another motivator for his crime e was arrested as -- crime. he was arrested as soon as he was finished. san francisco supervisors will vote on whether to add a new tax to the cost of alcoholic drinks served in the city. the cost recovery fee would add 3 to 5 cents to any alcoholic drink. the idea is to help san francisco recoup up to $16 million a year in health care costs related to alcohol abuse. alcohol distributers and san francisco restaurants oppose the fee. >> emergency transport and our fire department for treatment prevention services, for

hospitalization for people whose lives are shattered by alcohol. >> pretty soon the customer is gonna get caught up and drink in their hotel room and not the liquor store. today, the san francisco public utilities commission will unveil a plan for water treated parks. for the last few years, the city has used pristine water to water the parks. but to save water, they are proposing a water recycling project near ocean beach. the facility would disinfect 2 million gallons every day. if you drive across the dumbarton bridge, you may start

to see changes now that the salt pond restoration is finished. it's located along the southern end of the bridge on the west side. the pond will provide wetlands for migrating birds, which should start to open up in the next few months. this is part of a restoration plan for the bay. this project was restored at a cost of more than $9.2 million. more than 7.5 million was in federal funding. japan is confirming the first discovery of super resistant bacteria because of the gene known as mdm1 was found in a japanese man who had medical treatment in independent dena last -- india

last year. this has some people worried since many people travel there for plastic surgery. most pro athletes know there's always a chance of injuries when they play. but two san francisco giants feel especially bad about injuries about yesterday's game against arizona. a wild police chase through hayward while talking on a cell phone while driving not one man more than just a ticket. we do have very slow traffic in many areas. we'll tell you where and how you can get around some of these problems coming up.

a man is in jail following a police chase and crash in oakland. this happened around 12:30 this

morning after police tried to pull the man over for speeding. investigators say the man would not stop and sped down mandella parkway before crashing his suv. police found a gun in nearby bushes. a background checked that driver was a parolee and was out on bail for another offense. a man is in custody but another is still on the loose after a high-speed police chase and crash in hayward. police say they tried to pull over a driver for talking on his cell phone yesterday but he sped off. the driver hit another car before his car overturned. he and the passenger then ran off. police caught the driver, then found out he had an outstanding everyone what. he what -- had an outstanding warrant. he faces felony run and evading arrest charges. investigators are trying to figure out what caused a freak accident that left a bicyclist dead. a 51-year-old man was riding near the park yesterday when he fell off his bike and hit his

head on the pavement. a witness says the man lost control of his bike for no apparent reason and the man was wearing a helmet at time. two children were hurt in separate incidents at yesterday's game between the san francisco giants and the arizona diamondbacks. buster posey swung and missed a pitch. the bat went flying in the seats. a 13-year-old boy was hit in the head and taken out on a backboard. he's okay. later on, a girl was hit by a foul ball. both were taken to the emergency room but they are okay. >> imagine how bad the players feel. >> yes. they do feel bad. sal, how are you feeling about our commute? >> i'm feeling okay. as a matter of fact, we do have slow traffic out there. it's just typical for a tuesday after the holiday. northbound traffic getting busy right through downtown san jose getting up to the valley.

101 and 85 are slow. this morning's commute is gonna be okay if you are driving on 237 with some stop-and-go traffic at 880. but after that, it looks good at highway 101. there is a backup at the toll plaza, it's backed up for about a 15 minute to 20-minute delay. it's getting worse as more people try to squeeze into san francisco. here's steve. thank you, sal. a little bit of sun there. but a lot of fog has come back to the coast. that's gonna be a big drop in our temperatures compared to yesterday when we had 80s and 90s. temperature, 56, already the breeze kicking you. west-southwest 21 sustained at fairfield. that's a sign of times to come. current temperatures 50s and 60s. 54, san francisco. 47 sonoma county airport. that's cool. that's the coolest i can find. oakland airport says 60. 57 sanose and the leading edge of the system is right there, starting to pinwheel in here. that's going to give us a big trop in the temperatures.

just a short time ago, the u.s. coast guard began searching the waters off marin county. it's in response to a frantic mayday call that came in last night on a woman who made a

distressed call on the marin radio. she told the coast guard she was dealing with some type of emergency but provided no details. it's believed the call came from an area east of the tiburon peninsula. ktvu's claudine wong has been talking with a spokesman for details and will have a live update tat 8:00 a.m. a bay area family is turning to the public for help in their desperate search for a loved one. >> we just want to make sure she's okay even if she doesn't want to come back. >> worried family members have not seen kimmy silverthorne for the past two weeks. they believe the 22-year-old pittsburg woman may have traveled down the san jose area to sell magazines door to door. >> on the internet, she researched the traveling magazine door-to-door sales. >> kimmy silverthorne is 5'5", 180 to 230 pounds, with brown hair brown eyes. she always wear as cross around her neck. the family hopes at the very

least she will call them. police and volunteers are gonna go back to keller canyon landfall. this is day five of the very painstaking search for 35-year- old frederick sales. the nursing aide from hercules has been missing for about two weeks. police fear he may be a victim of last week's deadly rampage. efrain valdemoro is accused of killing the father of sales, along with three other people. you crews are back at petaluma cleaning up the vehicle. the source of the leak is an old tugboat that's being torn apart for scrap metal. it was first noticed yesterday morning. so far up to 600 gallons of oil have made it into the river. there's no reports of harm to the wildlife in the area but it's still unclear how long the cleanup will take.

fish and game told us they are reassessing the -- the area and will release more information shortly. a woman fell into a roo convenient while -- ravine while hiking. she had had been hiking on mount tam when she fell 22 feet down the ravine. she was rescued by the chp and taken to john muir medical center to be treated for her injuries. she suffered various cuts and a fractured ankle. a teenager had to be res crude in the current -- remembers cued in the current -- rescued in the current in bakersfield. crews tried to climb down to him. they couldn't reach him that way. so they brought in a device to

pluck him. there is a fire burning south of eureka. it started just after 9:00 last night. 21 local firefighters left from sunol to help crews on the fireline. the fire has burned 300 acres so far, including one structure. it's threatening several hours. in about half an hour we'll get an update on a fire burning near boulder, colorado. hundreds have been forced to evacuate their homes when the wind whipped flames through extremely dry foothills in the northwest areas of boulder. there are unconfirmed reports that dozens of homes have burned including firefighters' homes. high winds kept planes and firefighters on the ground yesterday. firefighters hope they will put up an aerial attack in a few

hours. "the examiner" is reporting that buses and trains were involved in six crashes every 10,000 miles between april and june. that includes this fatal accident just a couple of months ago. a man was struck by two buses. these new figures mark the first time muni has missed its safety goals in one year. a new study is suggesting some noisy routes on b.a.r.t. can be as loud as a jackhammer. kraig debro is in oakland with all of the details on this new report. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, dave. the story in "the san francisco chronicle" this morning, b.a.r.t.'s reacting to it. the paper said it's admits that the -- admitting that the noises are not damaging to your hearing but they suggest it can

and mid-80s. a lot of 60s and 70s. even cooler tomorrow, local drizzle. looks like the system will be trong enough. i will get out of the way -- strong enough. i will get out of the way so you can see it. there are signs for next week for rain, around next wednesday and thursday, some of our forecast models are very strong with another system that dives in. what's new? it's been this way since april. this will give us a pretty good cooldown. 60s, 70s and 80s on your temperatures today. a lot of 60s and 70s. reason being that low coming in right there. it's not strong enough to give us rain but it's strong enough to bring temperatures down 5, 10 degrees. the low will move in to about the sacramento valley. it will start to ee correct out. it -- eject out. mount tam is now down 8. they were at 70. now they are at 62.

here comes the cold air. it will be sunny as we get towards thursday. we'll stay on the cool side. fog is on the coast around the bay. sunny, breezy, cool earl today. 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. 50s and 60s. drizzle, cooler on wednesday. i think the fog gets wiped out so sun inny but breezy -- so sunny but breezy as we get toward the end of the with week. at this hour, tropical storm hermine is starting to lose its power as it moves past texas. the storm never reached hurricane strength but it still caused a lot of damage. it's left the town of raymondsville almost completely without power. there's been only minor flooding and there are no reports of serious injuries and no evacuations have been ordered. we're getting word the 7.1

earthquake that struck new zealand over the weekend apparently caused the earth's surface to lurch 11 feet to the right in that area. the quake hit christ church, new zealand's second largest city destroying about 500 buildings and causing at least $1.4 billion in damage. tough buildings codes are being credited with saving hundreds of lives. despite the damage, nobody was killed. airlines do it all the time but some schools in the north bay are accused of bumping students. we'll tell you why that is happening. and more complainting about pg&e's smartmeters. find out why they are accused of -- what they are accused of doing fiber one chewy bar.

the texas attorney general is investigating how google recommends weekses. that's after it was reported they've been abusing their powers. insiders say the review is focused on whether google is manipulating its research results to stifle competition. google is preparing to fire another shot in the ongoing rivalry, ap. google is talking with music industry deals. google may open a download store that would allow music users to play songs on their mp- 3 devices wherever they are. that store could be up and running by the holidays. there are angry parents in novato after several children are being forced to transfer to other schools just two weeks into their school year.

the problem, overcrowding. they said they overbooked some locations thinking some would not show you. now they have to relocate to make sure they reach class size to get the maximum funding from the state. more complaints about the smartmeters. dozens of readers have complain complained the meters are interfering with household items. people are saying cordless phones, baby monitors started to emit static after the meters were installed in their home. pg&e says the problems are with the household devices, not the meters. 75,000 bags of during treats are being recalled because of possible salmonella contamination. the hartz raw beef hide shows have been sold all over the

problem. san mateo county is reporting a big increase in the number of cases of whooping cough. as a result it's offering free vaccinations. the county had eight times as many cases in august than last year. whooping cough, also known as per toe sis, is -- pertussis, is highly contagious. getting a flu shot will be easier that year than last year. >> it was scary. it took forever to get the shots. i used to call every day. >> vaccine production problems caused shortages and long lines last fall but this year, clinics and pharmacies are stocking up early on supplies and healthcare reform requires medicare and private insurance to waive copays and deductibles so the shot is free to more

protesters think he should have used a -- think the police should have used a nonlethal weapon. jail officials say an inmate suddenly had trouble breathing and then stopped breathing altogether. a nurse and paramedics couldn't resuscitate him. the name of the inmate has not yet been released. a sa lin knauss man is -- salinas man is and -- is under arrest for secretly videotaping the victim in her bedroom while she was undressing. police say he hacked into the woman's e-mail account and sent the images to her boss. six flags in vallejo is reviewing its security procedures after there were two robberies in the last six weeks. the latest incident happened sunday night when two gunmen robbed three employees after the park closed.

caltrans is putting the finishing touches on freeway lanes. that would be a groundbreaking first for bay area commuters. the second hour of "mornings on 2" starts now. good morning. welcome back to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> and good morning. i'm dave clark. it's tuesday, september 7th. we're following developing news now. just within the past hour, the coast guard set up a helicopter responding to a mayday call. ktvu's claudine wong joining us live. she's on yerba buena island now with the very latest. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. yes. the search is underway actually in the far distance we can see the helicopter that's just made a path through here. that helicopter went up at 6:45 this morning looking for the distressed boater. the coast guard started their search last night after this mayday call came in just a few minutes before 10:00.

it wasn't a call that gave them very much information, however. they heard a woman's voice as she hailed on this emergency frequency. she basically just said she was putting out a mayday. but that's it. they tried to call her back, get her back on the radio. but they weren't able to do that. they sent out a couple of vessels to start searching the waters. they were able to pinpoint the location to the tiburon peninsula. but after that, they weren't able to get any more information. so what they've done now at first light. they've come back out on the -- over the air to search the waters out here to see if they can find out any more information. i want to introduce lieutenant laura williams. we just saw the helicopter up there. tell me what plan is this morning. >> it's to search the search area that we discovered last night based on -- we have a search program and we use that. >> reporter: tiburon peninsula and i know you looked from the

richmond/san rafael bridge to angel island and it gets bigger today. you don't have a lot of information to work off of. >> no. the only information we have is the distressed call from last night which says the individuals had a had mayday. that's one of the things we want to stress to people, when you have a mayday you call 911. the more information you give us, the better we were able to respond to the case. >> reporter: was there any indication about what kind of distress this person would have been in or you were cut off and left stuck a bit? >> yes. the mayday call simply said, i have a mayday. of that was -- and that was all. the more information we have, the better opportunity we have to do the rescue. >> reporter: how long do you search before you basically

say, until we hear more we can't do anything else. >> we have a search program that defines the search area, and we saturate the search area and when we have finished searching it, we -- you know, we brief for suspension. >> reporter: thanks for the update. at this point they are going over the entire area. as they look for any sign of this person who called in for help, this person who said they had had a mayday but at this this point -- but at this point, a lot of questions still on who they are and if they need help. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, claudine. three minutes after 8:00. it was a busy night for oakland police. they were called to respond to three sheetings and it all happen -- shootings and they all happened at about the same time. jade hernandez is live with more. >> reporter: good morning. we're live at police

headquarters. we're waiting to hear back an update from all three of these shootings. these sa shootings happened been -- shootings happened in about an hour. the shootings are not unusual in oakland. we wanted to put all of the shootings on a map for you to show you where the violence broke out. the first, 52nd avenue, the second, 79th avenue at holly street. the third, 36th street and west street. the first happened at foothill boulevard and 56th where a man was shot in the back. while officers were helping that victim, someone drove up to them and reported another shooting on 79th avenue and holly street. officers found a woman there. hadder finger had been shot off. paramedics rushed her to highland hospital. and then officers went on the third shooting of the night to 36th and west street. two victims were found in that shooting, a man and a woman.

their injuries were all severe. it appears the couple were sitting in their car when they were shot. both are in the hospital raced in critical condition -- hospitalized in critical condition. the police would like you to call them immediately if you have any information. we've contacted the police department with another information about the shootings. and if we get more information we'll pass it on to you. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, jade. the union city man accused of shooting a fremont police officer is due to be arraigned in court. 20-year-old andrew barrientos faces attempted murder and other charges in connection with the near fatal shooting of officer todd young. he was arrested almost two weeks ago near the mexican border. in the meantime, officer young remains in the hospital with critical wounds to his leg. he will probably require some

physical therapy but he is expected to recover. 8:50. the future of three -- 8:0 a. the future of three contra costa schools may be decided tonight. kennedy, olinda and grant elementary are on the chopping block. last year, the school board decided to close the schools because of declining enrollment as a way to save some money. the city of richmond came up with $1.5 million to keep the schools open through this school year. tonight, richmond city council will be voting on whether or not to continue funding those schools. today, san francisco supervisors will vote on whether to add a new tax to the cost of alcoholic drinks, served in the city. the alcohol costs recovery fee would add 3 cents to 5 cents to a bottle of beer, wine or any alcoholic drink. the idea is to help the city recoup up to 16 million a year in healthcare costs related to

alcohol abuse. alcohol distributers and san francisco restaurants oppose the fee. >> emergency transport and our fire department for treatment, prevention services, of people whose lives are really shattered by alcohol. >> pretty soon the customer is gonna get fed up and maybe drink in a hotel room, buy their liquor at a liquor store. if approved, the new fee would kick if in january. but that's only expected in there is a veto by mayor newsom. caltrans will be begin to put the finishing touches on the first freeway express toll lane. the 680 at the lane is scheduled to be opened september together. when it opens, solo drivers will have the option to use the diamond lane if they pay a fluctuating fee. the lane runs 14 miles from calaveras road in sunol to highway 37 in milpitas.

a set period is set to begin next sunday. during that time, tolls will not be collected. traffic planners expect delays during the transition as commuters get used to the change. >> sal are be all over that telling the suiters about this. but right now you are gonna tell us about an incident in hayward. >> that's right. southbound, 880 as you drive through tennyson, this crash has been there now for a little bit. and it's still there as they work on the injured person. we're waiting for tow trucks to arrive on scene as well. it's a sig-alert, the left lane and two right lanes are going to be open soon. but it was blocking, a lot of the lanes of the freeway. we're getting information that this could be cleared in the next 10 to 15 minutes.

this started a couple of hours ago, just off southbound highway 101 near sir francis drake boulevard and larkspur. firefighters were able to keep the flames away from this nearby homes. investigators blame a man who they say was doing drugs for starting an overnight fire at an oakland hotel. the flames damaged seven units of the travel inn on west macarthur boulevard as well as two nearby vehicles. a visitor from mississippi says she was staying right next door to where the fire started.

death of a woman whose body was found inside of a suitcase in the san francisco bay may have been prevented. the "san francisco chronicle" reports police are looking into a previous domestic violence involving the victim, pearlalou pearlalou -- pearllaw louis. police are look to determine if there was some violation of department policy. it is 8:18. today, the san francisco public utilities commission will unveil a plan to water city parks with treated waste water. for the last 75 years, the city has used pristine mountain water to irrigate golden gate park, the presidio golf course and lincoln park but the utility is proposing a water recycling project near ocean

beach. the facility would disinfect 2 million gallons of sewage and storm water each day and spread it through the network of existing pipes and sprinklers in the parks. people who drive across the dumbarton bridge may begin seeing some changes soon now a major section of the salt pond restoration is completed. it's located on the southern edge of the bridge on the west side. the former salt pond will provide 237 acres of newly- restored wetlands for migrating birds which should begin showing up over the next few months. the finished project will officially open at a ceremony this morning and is part of a 50-year restoration plan for the bay. this park was restored at 9.2 million. more than 7.5 of it came from federal funds. there was trouble in the stands at last night's giants' game in arizona the it involved two children. a wild police chase through hayward. how talk ong a cell phone while

one man is in jail following a police chase and crash on the streets of oakland. it happened about 12:0 this morning after officers tried to pull the man over for speeding. investigators say the man refused to stop and then sped down man del raw parkway before crashing his suv on 28th street. officers then found a gun in nearby bushes. a pack ground check revealed the driver was a parolee out on vail for another offense. in hayward there was another high-speed chase and crash. drivers threed -- tried to pull over for talk -- talk ong his cell phone but he sped off. the driver hit another car before his car turned over. he and the passenger took off. they caught the driver and he has a felony warrant. he faces felony charges and evading arrest. investigators are investigating a freak accident where a 51-year-old man was

killed in dollar county. heful off his bike and hit his head on the pavement. a witness says the man lost control of his bike for no apparent reason. he was wearing a helmet at the time. two children were hurt in separate incidents at last night's game between the san francisco giants and the arizona diamondbacks diamondbacks. the giants catcher buster posy spun. had us back went flying in the stands. a 13-year-old boy was hit in the head with it. he's okay. later, a 2-year-old girl was hit in the head by a foul ball. both kids were taken to the emergency room. they were treated and released. and certainly good news that the children are okay. the other good news, the giants won the game, right -- right, sal? and they are still one game back? >> yeah. they're chasing the padres who had lost ten in a row until they won last night.

this is day five for the search of frederick sales. the 35-year-old nursing aide from hercules has been missing for almost two weeks now. investigators fear he may be a victim of last week's deadly rampage. efrain valdemoro is suspected of killing sales's father along with three other people. we're also learning more about the homicide in newark. the victim is 26-year-old julius hughes. police found his body near the w hotel on gateway. he lived in the brent www.area -- brentwood area. police say he was a suspect in a homicide in san francisco two years ago but the charge was

-- an old tugboat that's being torn apart for scrap metal. it was first noticed yesterday morning. so far, as much as 6,000 gallons of oil have made it into the river. had jose there's no report of harm to the wildlife. but it's still not clear how long the cleanup will take. officials say they are assessing this bill right now and they hope to release more information on this in a couple of hours. a concord woman is recovering following a helicopter rescue after she fell into a ravine while hiking. charlotte loving had had been hiking on mount tam in marin county yesterday afternoon when she fell 22 feet into a ravine. a chp helicopter rescued her and she was taken to john muir medical center in walnut creek for treatment to her injuries and she suffered various cuts and a possible fractured ankle. a san jose teenager had to be rescued after being swept up by the current in bakersfield.

the 19-year-old managed to grab on to a rock but was stranded there. the kern county sheriff's department said crews tried to reach him but couldn't so they used a helicopter to pluck him out of the water. "the can enenner" is reporting that with uses and trains were involved in more crashes this year than last year. the new figures mark the first time that muni has missed its safety goals in one year. well, could a commute to work on b.a.r.t. actually be harmful to your hearing? a new study is suggesting some noisy routes can be as loud as a jack ham he. kraig debro is live in oakland with all of the details. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, dave. an article in this morning's "san francisco chronicle" said they sent reporters out to 208

miles of track to measure the noise levels. some parts were quiet, some were loud. the transbay tube, the loudest. >> right about now it's hard to hear. >> reporter: we didn't have any equipment ourselves to measure the sound. but according to the paper, the levels can reach a hundred decibels. a des measures the intensity of the -- a decibel measures the intensity of sound. the institute says most people would have to be exposed to 91- decibels for two hours straight before hearing damage could set in. now, passengers don't ride that long but train operators do, we talked to one who says he already takes precautions. >> yeah. time after time going through there, i know it must build up.
